I have stacks of books on Ohio History and consult allot websites when I plan a trip.  ( BTW quick note to anyone who draws me in a gift exchange, If you see the book here I have it already)

To me there are two types of History books and references. The first I will call the gateways ; these are the ones that are fun to read or study and get you hooked.

The gateways set up the second type these are very detailed and well researched. they are still fun to read but it it helps if you have some background and interest. To be honest I use many of these as reference books and have never sat down to read them cover to cover.

The resources on this page are the "gateway" ones. They have inspired me to go travel and see places.

Alan Eckert is my favorite author on Ohio History The Frontiersman and Tecumseh: Sorrow of the heart are my favorites.  These are very well researched historical novels. They do not read like History books but are footnoted and go into detail if you want. The bibliographies in these cover allot of ground.  But most of all they are good reads. The Frontiersman has won many awards and both books are for sale and should be at your local library.  Here is a link to the authours website. http://www.allaneck.com/index.html

Ever see one of these markers ? There are over 1300 in the state and Remarkable Ohio is the searchable database that lists them all.

These are a great way to research an event or just find something new. I have lost count of how many of these I have found ; but its fun searching them out.

My Geek flag is flying proudly on this one. Howes Ohio was originally published for the state centenial; my copy is 104 years old. Fortunately it has been scanned and you can see it all by clicking on the picture at the left. This is a very good site to do some research.

Why a 100 year old History Book you ask ?  Because 100 Years ago Henry Howe filled two volumes on Ohio History. By the time I got to school The Ohio History book had been editted down to one volume and contained 200 years of history. So there is allot in here that hit the editors floor over the years.

Its also a neat look at how people thought at the time.

The Geneology Societies Site is well done and has lots of great resources.

I like these because the authors do a great job telling the stories and background on the sites. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not the stories in these books are well researched and fun to read.

The Link here is to a website called Forgotten Ohio its fun and does a great job telling the history on many locations.

There is a book called Weird Ohio that is a great read and a must for anyone travelling Ohio.

Daniel Boone is a pivotal figure for the frontier. He was in Ohio on a regular basis and this biography is the best I have read on him.

It is hard to understand Ohio's history without having some knowledge of how Kentucky was settled. This book covers the time period and many prominent figures in Ohio History show up.

This book covers different routes thru Ohio. The author does a great job showing off Ohio's History and great roads. While geared to motorcyclists you could do these routes in any vehicle and have a great day. The author has several themed rides in here, this is one of my favorite ways to travel with a group.

Ive seen it at many bookstores and a few Libraries. But If you know anyone with a bike they most have gotten a few copies every holiday season :-) I have 3.
